TWENTY-EIGHT

From the journal of Robert Bowers

March 2024

Things are settling down in some ways. What’s helped me push through my anxiety and endure the recurring nightmares is Avery. I’ve grown incredibly attached to the little girl since she came to live with us. It feels like she’s given my life new meaning.

It would have been too difficult to write about her before now because it was so traumatic and fresh, but taking in Julia’s niece was unexpected as we weren’t even aware she had a niece. Last fall, Julia told me she’d been contacted on social media by a half-sister she never knew she had. I learned that Julia’s mother had been married twice. The first time was before she met Julia’s father, to a man named Bill Fletcher. Julia already knew this, but she didn’t know any details. She only knew that they broke up shortly before Gloria went on to meet her second husband.

It seems that Bill and Gloria had a daughter together, Mary. She was only a baby when they broke up. Instead of being raised by Gloria, Mary lived with her father, who moved away to Pennsylvania. It was that daughter, now aged forty-three, who contacted Julia. She explained she’d recently received a terminal cancer diagnosis and was desperate to find a family member to take care of her little girl to avoid her going into foster care. Her father and stepmother had died some time ago, leaving her without any other appropriate family members to approach, so she’d researched her family tree and found details of her biological mother. Bill had always put her off reuniting with Gloria—for reasons unknown to us—so she traced Julia’s whereabouts instead and begged her to visit them in Pennsylvania before she died, hoping that Julia would agree to take care of Avery.

Once Mary sadly passed away, we brought the bereft little girl home. It all happened so fast, and I’ll admit it was a shock, but one I couldn’t be happier about now. It’s sad that my wife didn’t get to have a relationship with her half-sister because I think having at least one close female bond could have helped her cope with life differently, but having a child in the house has changed everything for me.

I’m enjoying life in ways I never thought possible. And even Julia, who was so adamant she didn’t want children of her own, is warming to Avery. Her maternal instinct is flawless. She always knows when Avery needs something, whether food, comfort or a trip out of the house. She puts the child’s needs first every time, and I’m secretly hopeful it might make her want to give Avery a brother or sister one day soon.

For some reason, the thought both excites and terrifies me. But I can’t let anxiety rule my emotions. I just can’t.

We thought it best to call Avery our daughter, especially once we decided to move to Sunset Heights, where no one knew us. It just makes things easier for all of us.
